Have these ready
- A free HDMI port on your TV (and a power outlet nearby)
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password
- An account with the device maker (Roku, Amazon, Google or Apple), or a phone to create one
- The logins for the streaming services you already pay for
The usual setup flow
Connect
Plug in HDMI and power, using the adapter in the box rather than the TV's USB port.
Choose the input
Press Input or Source on your TV remote and pick the HDMI port you used.
Join Wi-Fi and sign in
Follow the on-screen steps. Only sign in on the brand's own screen, website or app.
Add your apps
Install your services from the device's app store and sign in to each one.
A steadier Wi-Fi picture
Buffering is usually about signal strength where the TV sits, not the speed you pay for. These commonly help:
- Place the router in the open, higher up and away from thick walls and metal.
- Use the 5 GHz network if your router has separate bands and the TV is close.
- Use Ethernet if your device has a port or supports an adapter.
- Restart the router and streaming device occasionally.
Stay safe
Official setup is always free. Activating a streaming device never requires paying a third party, calling an unknown phone number or giving anyone remote access to your computer. If a website or pop-up asks for this, close it and go directly to your device maker's official site. Learn more in the FTC's guide to tech support scams.
